In a word, major renovations to
St Joseph’s Parish Church, Malvern are
splendid. The visitor‘s gaze is immediately
drawn to the simplicity of the sanctuary
– its perfect roundness and the warmth
of native timbers. The crucified Christ,
sculpted in bronze hangs in the middle
of the main arch. Jesus confronts the
congregation with the reality of the
crucifixion and raises His right hand from
the crossbar to invite resurrection.
Fr Brian O’Sullivan, CM, Parish Priest,
shared that a process of discernment which
took place over 5 years was essential to
renewing the space for worship and prayer
at this beautiful church built in 1908.
Parishioners were encouraged to enhance
their understanding of the principles of
liturgy and liturgical space. Decisions were
not made on personal spirituality but with
a view to traditions in theology and the
ideals of Vatican II. “Our hope was to create
worship space which suited parishioners’
needs and would be both beautiful and
functional,” Father Brian said.
Devotional places within St Joseph’s reflect
both ancient and modern aspects of Faith
and practice. Exterior entrances were
redesigned to move to a single gathering
space where parishioners happily meet one
another. It is here that the newly written
icon of St Joseph to honour the parish
patron has been given pride of place.
This exciting parish project was made
possible by your investment support
of CDF.
