Echidna Invasion of Plague Proportions Predicted!

Catholic primary schools have been warned. An echidna invasion is on the way.

But not to worry. Sammy the Saver, the CDF echidna promises to be a popular visitor, ready to introduce new students to the Catholic Development Fund Savers Club.

Sammy will be featured on gifts to new savers, including welcome certificates and property labels. Students will be enchanted as Sammy engages in a wide variety of "non-Echidna" activities. Images of Sammy surfing, Sammy skipping rope, Sammy learning computer skills, promise to stretch fertile young imaginations.

Why was an echidna chosen to promote CDF student banking? Damien Cairns, Business Development Manager, responded, "Animals are always very appealing to young children. We recognised that nearly 6% of children who attend Catholic primary schools were born overseas. Many more claim parents who have emigrated to Australia. So it seemed important to focus on an Australian animal and the echidna’s manner of protecting itself relates to the concept of saving, and protecting your future!!!"

CDF student saving is available in 230 schools and is supported by over 420 volunteer agency operators. Student saving deposits total $7.0 million, and assist the Fund in providing low cost finance for capital projects throughout the Archdiocese.

ECHIDNA

This little Australian creature eats ants and termites and sleeps most of the day. Echidnas and platypuses are the only egg-laying mammals in the world. A baby echidna is called a "puggle". Echidnas have the ability to defend themselves by rolling into a ball and only showing their sharp spines or burrowing into soft soil and holding on below the surface with their claws, thus resisting being dislodged.
